How We Work | Christopher S. Lee, CPA, LLC

How we work

The right work starts with the right facts.

We start with the facts, recommend the right level of support, and define the scope and fee before moving forward.

The right engagement begins with understanding the full picture.

Every engagement begins with a conversation and a review of your most recent tax returns. That gives us a reliable starting point for understanding what is already happening, where complexity exists, and whether planning may add meaningful value.

From there, we recommend the appropriate service tier: accurate tax preparation, focused advice around a specific decision, or an ongoing planning and accounting relationship.

As a firm policy, we do not issue proposals for tax services until we have reviewed your prior tax returns.

A straightforward path from conversation to engagement.

  1. 01

    Discovery

We begin with a 30-minute conversation about your income, businesses, investments, upcoming decisions, and the professionals already on your team.

  2. 02

    Review

We review your recent tax returns and relevant financial information to confirm the facts and assess the complexity of your situation.

  3. 03

    Recommendation

You receive a clearly defined scope, service cadence, and fee before work begins.

  4. 04

    Coordination

With your consent, we work directly with your financial advisor, attorney, and other professionals so important decisions do not happen in isolation.

Support matched to the work in front of you.

The appropriate tier is determined after our discovery conversation and review of your prior tax returns.

Sample fees

These amounts are examples, not quotes. Actual fees depend on complexity, organization, filing jurisdictions, investments, entities, and the work required. In accordance with firm policy, tax proposals are issued only after reviewing prior tax returns.

Clear expectations before work begins.

Most engagements use a defined fee rather than an open-ended hourly meter. Good planning depends on early conversations, and clients should not hesitate to call because they are worried the clock is running.

Scope first

You receive the services, cadence, responsibilities, and fee in writing before the engagement begins.

No surprise expansion

If your needs change materially, we discuss the additional work and agree on a revised scope first.

Fees reflect complexity

Entity count, filing jurisdictions, investments, transactions, organization, and communication needs all affect the work required.

Your professionals should work together.

With your written consent, we coordinate directly with your financial advisor, attorney, and other professionals. This reduces duplicated requests and helps ensure tax consequences are considered while decisions are still being made.

Approved advisors can receive shared portal access for mutual clients, view relevant documents, and help complete information requests. The result feels less like a collection of separate providers and more like one coordinated advisory team.

Before you get started.

Do I need ongoing tax planning?

No. Some clients need tax preparation only, while others need advice for a specific event. We recommend ongoing planning only when your situation and decision cadence justify it.

What do you need before providing a proposal?

We begin with a discovery conversation and review of your prior tax returns. It is firm policy that no proposal for tax services is issued without first reviewing those returns. Additional information may be requested when businesses, trusts, investments, real estate, bookkeeping, or upcoming transactions affect the scope.

Can you work with my financial advisor or attorney?

Yes. That is one of our superpowers. We enjoy working with the other professionals you trust to help produce the best outcomes for you. With your consent, we can communicate directly with the professionals on your team, coordinate details on your behalf, and reduce the number of items you have to manage personally. The goal is to make your life easier.

Do you work with clients throughout the United States?

Yes. The firm is based in Indianapolis and works remotely with clients throughout the United States when the engagement is a good fit.

Do you extend tax returns?

As appropriate. We may recommend an extension when required information is not yet available or when additional time is needed to prepare a complete and accurate return. An extension provides additional time to file; it does not extend the original deadline for paying tax that is due.

What happens if the scope changes?

We discuss the additional work before proceeding and provide a revised or separate quote. The goal is for fees and responsibilities to remain clear throughout the engagement.

Not sure which level of support fits?

You do not need to diagnose your own tax needs. Start with a conversation, and we will recommend the appropriate next step.
